AlmaNova,  “Song for Marcus” (PDF).

Note from Almer About This Piece:

“During my time as a starving student in Cardiff,  I earned some money to pay my rent by playing in a Turkish restaurant.  Every evening a man would come in and sit right in front of me with a good bottle of red wine and listen to me play.  Sometimes he would request songs and some of his favorites were rumbas by the Gypsy Kings! Eventually,  this man,  Mr. Marcus Lewis,  and I became very good friends and I came to know his great passion for the guitar.  To show my gratitude for his support and friendship during my student years in Cardiff,  I wrote him Song for Marcus.  Song for Marcus is written with the rhythm of the rumba strongly in mind and is not to be played in the traditional classical style even though it is written for the classical guitar and flute.  Please feel free to embellish the written melody.  The flute improvisation section beginning in bar 30 through 33 can last as long as the players wish.  For the classical flutist trying to improvise for the first time,  I suggest using the following notes as a guide:  E, F, G#, A, B, C, D, E”.
